This is for secondary school science teachers who are mentoring science inquiry projects.

Course synopsis

This course is designed for secondary school science teachers who are mentoring science inquiry projects. Science inquiry projects offers students an integrated and authentic way to learn the epistemic practices of science which includes collecting evidence, making sense of evidence, ways of proposing knowledge, communicating knowledge, evaluating knowledge and legitimising the knowledge. Students involved in science project learn both the subject matter knowledge of science as well as the processes involved in arriving at the scientific knowledge. Proper mentoring throughout the science project would enhance students’ motivation, interest and learning in science.

Objective

This six-hour course aims to enable teachers to:
1. Distinguish workable and meaningful science project ideas from those that are less meaningful.
2. Identify the types of data that should be collected in an inquiry project.
3. Plan a realistic method of analysis for students to arrive at a conclusion.
4. Critique high quality science project work from those that are mediocre.

Outline

This course is divided into two 3-hour sessions.

During the first 3-hour session, participants will be involved in idea generation for science project, transforming research questions into more meaningful ones, and planning workable and realistic timelines for science project during the school year.

For the second 3-hour session, participants will given some data, and they will work in groups to analyse and present their conclusions in the form of a scientific report. They will also be given different examples of students’ work to critique in order to differentiate the quality of science projects.
