Course synopsis |
|
The course will equip students with knowledge underpinning the complexity of coaching at the developmental and elite levels. Topics on theoretical concepts, empirical findings and applications in the development of athletes at the developmental and elite levels will be covered. A mix of face-to-face interactions, online learning and group work will be implemented in this course. Students are also required to attach themselves to a developmental or elite team in a sport of their choice to learn and bridge the theory-practice link. |

At the completion of the course, students will be able to:
• To have a better understanding of the complex processes and issues associated with coaching at the developmental and elite levels • To have a better understanding of research in effective coaching and learning for coaches and athletes • To apply the knowledge learned in class through the identification and presentation of a specific research topic of his/her choice critically • To evaluate the effectiveness of the coaching attachment programme that aims to enhance coach learning and athlete performance, and present the findings and implications critically |

Participation in sports has the potential to achieve positive effects such as social development and prosocial behavior among athletes. A coach plays an important role in this process of facilitating athletes’ overall development, guided improvement and enjoyment. In this regard, understanding the theoretical concepts, approaches and best practices that underpinned effective coaching is essential for coaches, physical educators, and sports administrators. Students in the MSc (ESS) programme will benefit from this course as both theoretical foundations and latest scientific advances in the field are presented for their research and practice.
