Objective

The MEC901 Course conceptualizes children’s development across infancy, preschool and primary years (birth to 8 years) through the critical review of and reflection on various developmental theories, models, approaches and scholarly works. It is designed to study children’s development in an integrated way by utilizing a multidisciplinary framework and approach. It is believed that children should not be studied using a single perspective or through developmental stages alone. However, a holistic view of children should be built across disciplines, domains, contexts and cultures.

In this course, participants will develop critical lens to reflect on their role as a key adult stakeholder (e.g., as parents, early childhood educators, etc.) in children’s development through:

  • understanding the influences of child development from a multi-disciplinary approach

  • understanding and being equipped with observational techniques

  • utilizing an integrated framework to analyse and support children’s development

  • examining current local issues which have an impact on children’s development

  • applying theory to practice through an authentic task in studying children in a given context and setting
