Course synopsis

This course aims to support the primary school Library Co-ordinator, Head of English, or any teacher who is interested in building the school’s reading culture through the school library. The course will focus on three key areas:

  1. Making the library and library collections accessible and attractive
  2. Planning and executing exciting library events
  3. Planning and delivering practical reading programmes and routines

Objective

The objectives of the course are to introduce participants to:
1) basic principles for developing and maintaining the school library;
2) key ideas for planning and executing exciting library programmes that encourage and support reading;
3) a sustainable framework for running a school-wide reading programme.


Closing Date of Application: 15 October 2020

The course fee for MOE participants will be borne by MOE/AST.
Priority of course placement is to MOE participants. If there are vacancies, then we can accept non-MOE participants.

“Housekeeping”: Making your library and library collections accessible and attractive


  • Thinking about the purpose of your library, the importance of a library policy and how to write one

  • Addressing specific needs of your library users when identifying and procuring resources

  • Identifying useful library practices and implementing them


 
Glam it up!: Planning and executing exciting library events


  • Setting up a Library calendar for the term / year

  • Collaborating with key personnel

  • Budgeting for reading events

  • Looking beyond the school community for input

  • Outreach programmes



Keep things moving: Planning and delivering practical reading programmes and routines


  • Offering exciting ‘extras’ to library users to keep them interested

  • Collaborating with teachers and students in book promotions

  • Building reading for enjoyment into the curriculum



Each of the above components will include discussions on online delivery.
