An introduction to mise-en-scene, cinematography, editing and sound.

Course synopsis

As a conduit of narrative that encapsulates the five areas of study outlined by the Literature syllabus, film criticism and appreciation can play a bridging role to literary concepts. An understanding of film will also enhance the Viewing and Representing possibilities in both English Language and Mother Tongue Language classrooms.

The session aims to introduce participants to the four elements of film, namely mise-en-scene (setting, lighting, props/make-up, and acting), cinematography, editing and sound, and the production of film genre. This is a Beginners’ Level course that covers the fundamental components of film and is useful to teachers who would like to appreciate film, teach film and use film in the classroom.

Objective

At the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  1. explain the role of each of the four elements of film;

  2. understand how the four elements produce an effect on the audience;

  3. have a deeper appreciation of how the medium of film works.
