Basic coding skills in a selected computer programming language

Course synopsis

A basic course in coding for teachers will include fundamental programming concepts like data structures/types, flow chart, basic syntax and commands (conditionals like if-then-else, loops), etc.  Applications include writing useful programs in the selected language to solve mathematical problems, or to explain mathematical concepts.

Objective

This course aims to equip mathematics teachers with:

  1. basic programming concepts using a selected vehicular programming language;

  2. the ability to write programmes to teach a concept or to solve a mathematics problem;

  3. an enhanced understanding of learning mathematics (or mathematical reasoning) via computer programming.


Outline

This course runs over 4 weeks, 3 hours per session.

Session 1: Installation procedures, interactive mode, elementary commands, data types
Session 2: Integers, Booleans, Lists, Decimal (Floating numbers), String types, logical operators, if-then-else conditional, for and while loops, type conversion
Session 3: Mathematics related programs
Session 4: Advanced topics: random number generators, dictionary, etc.
