Course synopsis

This course offers an introduction to mental health tools that gather information about emotional and psychological state presented by clients. It also offers an application of a framework for the conceptualization of mental health concerns and how the framework informs the treatment process.

Objective

The course would involve (a) case-based discussions and applications to illustrate what is involved in the process of mental health assessment, and (b) case conceptualization to develop skills on 'how to think' and 'act' in the process to inform the treatment formulation. The following topics will be covered:

  1. Introduction to Mental Health Assessment tools for identification of mood disorders, sleep wake disorder, suicidality, stress and behavioural health issues leading to lifestyle diseases.

  2. Synthesis and explanation of ideas into ‘working hypotheses’ from historical information gathered during the assessment process.

  3. Description of data and symptoms gathered using various frameworks to conceptualize the issue(s).

  4. Using the conceptualization to guide treatment formulation and process.
