Course synopsis

  • Gain a deeper understanding of the foundational principles of early numeracy development in kindergarten-aged children.
  • Explore practical strategies and hands-on activities to promote number sense, counting skills, and basic mathematical operations.
  • Learn effective techniques for integrating numeracy concepts into daily routines and play-based learning experiences.
  • Develop skills in assessing and monitoring children's numeracy progress through informal observation and reflection.
  • Understand the importance of differentiation and individualized instruction in supporting diverse learners in the kindergarten classroom.
  • Reflect on personal teaching practices and identify areas for growth in nurturing early numeracy skills.

This short course

  1. raises the quality and capabilities of Early Childhood Educators, through professionalization and recognition,
  2. helps participants be of high-quality and responsive in the Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) sector to support industry transformation and good employment outcomes for Singaporeans.

Objective

By the end of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Develop a better understanding of young children’s mathematical abilities.

  2. Facilitate young children’s development of key mathematical skills.


Outline

There are two 3-hour sessions.  The sessions will cover content involving mathematical skills (numbers, relations, and number operations) and assessment.

Session 1:
Understanding Early Numeracy Development (1.5 hour): Overview of key concepts and milestones in early numeracy. The role of kindergarten teachers in nurturing numeracy skills.

Building Blocks of Number Sense (1.5 hour): Strategies for developing a strong foundation in number sense. Engaging activities to promote counting, ordering, and number relations.

Session 2:
Exploring Basic Operations Through Play (1.5 hour): Introducing addition and subtraction concepts through hands-on activities and games. Incorporating mathematical thinking into everyday experiences

Assessing and Supporting Numeracy Growth (1.5 hour): Techniques for informal assessment and monitoring of numeracy development. Differentiation strategies to meet the needs of diverse learners

Course is conducted face-to-face at NIE campus.
