Outline

This course consists of 5 parts and should be completed in sequence.

Part 1: Psychology of Learning
This introductory part of the course provides the theoretical foundation for teaching and learning. From behaviourism to constructivism to social cognitivism, we will look at how these theoretical perspectives influence teaching and learning, in particular, how learning happens, why we need to scaffold learning and the importance of student motivation in learning.

Part 2: Curriculum Planning
This segment will enable participants to design unit plans to enhance students’ learning in the arts. Participants will engage in the process of developing a unit of lessons using principles of curriculum planning. Participants will also be introduced to the principles and purposes of assessment and ways assessment can be integrated to improve teaching and learning in the arts.

Part 3: Lesson Planning and Assessment
Participants will learn how to design and plan effective lessons to maximise student learning, engagement and achievement in your lesson. You will learn about key considerations in lesson planning which include lesson objectives, instructional strategies, and ways to evaluate students’ learning.

Part 4: Facili-Acting
This part provides an introduction to the work of FaciliActors in 21stcentury education by examining the importance of key skills and capacities involved in FaciliActor pedagogy. FaciliActor, a term that combines the words ‘facilitator’ and ‘actor’, is developed by NIE Drama to engage with the changing demands of educators who perform a wide range of roles in order to lead students through processes of creative and collaborative learning. Facilitating critical dialogue through drama-based multi-modal vocabularies, the FaciliActor also performs related skills through embodied learning. This course briefly explains how the work of FaciliActing entails a rethinking of conventional pedagogies to develop frames for thinking, listening, participating and responding, that are based in storytelling, play and improvisation. It also highlights the importance of dialogue, empathy, collaboration and experimentation as critical capacities that FaciliActors focus on in their approach to critical pedagogy.

Part 5: e-Pedagogy
The final part of the course will explore the use of e-pedagogies in the Arts; that is, the practice of teaching the Arts in a virtual space and the specific kinds of skills required to do so effectively. Participants will examine the uses of multimedia equipment and digital technologies, and technology-infused curricula, and design a technology based curricular unit of an Arts programme and implement that unit in a real-world scenario such as their own classroom or studio.
