Integrated STEM task on creating a stationery organiser with message notification function

Course synopsis

STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) tasks should explicitly integrate two or more of the four S-T-E-M disciplines. In this course, participants will learn how the meriSTEM@NIE STEM Quartet framework is used to guide the design and implementation of a task that integrates all four disciplines in solving an authentic problem. During the course, participants will have hands-on experience in designing and building a stationery organiser prototype. The conceptual, epistemic and social affordances of the STEM task will be discussed.

Objective

  1. To demonstrate how to use the meriSTEM@NIE STEM Quartet framework to design and implement an integrated STEM task.

  2. To provide hands-on experience for course participants in designing and implementing an integrated STEM task that can be replicated in the classroom.

Outline

  1. Components of the meriSTEM@NIE STEM Quartet

  2. Using sketching as a thinking tool to design on paper.

  3. Using making as a thinking tool to make a prototype.

  4. Applying mathematical concepts in the making of a prototype, connecting mathematics to real application.

  5. Constructing a series electric light circuit using a battery holder, a bulb holder and a micro-switch.

  6. Building a prototype.

  7. Evaluating the conceptual, epistemic and social affordances of the task.
